Our Story
I’m Phu Duong, founder of MR. FAT Noodle & Seafood in Melbourne, Australia. My life has rarely followed the plan I imagined — every time I thought I’d found my footing, I had to start over. But it was exactly those moments that made me who I am.
I arrived in Australia as an international student — studying, working, and carrying my own life all at once. At 17 I took my first job at McDonald’s, and by 19 I was a manager, learning discipline, pressure, people, and systems. Only years later would I understand how much those lessons were worth.
Then came construction. Foundations, framing, hauling props and timber boards of 20–25 kg under Australia’s 35–40 degree sun. There were days my body had nothing left to give — but in a foreign land, you don’t get many choices. You push on.
Timber flooring came next, and with it the dream I had always carried: to be my own boss. At 23, I started my own flooring business — my own van, my own tools, owner and tradesman in one. I gave it everything I had. After nearly three years, I failed.
That failure broke my heart, but it taught me that hard work alone is never enough. And it couldn’t stop me — because one passion still burned: food. I began selling meals online, cooking every dish myself, listening to every customer, letting small orders slowly grow into belief.
At 26, at the end of 2019, I opened my very first food brand. It wasn’t just a shop. It was me standing back up — this time on a path that was truly my own.
That is why MR. FAT Noodle & Seafood was born in Melbourne. Every bowl carries those years — the shifts served, the timber hauled under the sun, the business that failed, the small online orders that let me begin again.
If my journey has taught me one thing, it is this: in a foreign land, nothing comes easy. But if you stay resilient, stay true to your passion, and dare to start over after every fall, you can still write your own story.
